Coyote Gulch Hike
Mark & Wadeth
Wadeth planned all our hikes on this voyage. She did an excellent job
preparing maps and information to make our trip smooth. Coyote Gulch was her
discovery. There is a dry wash called Hurricane which begins at the
roadside where it is about 5 feet deep. This wash deepens into a stone
gorge 700 feet deep in places, and becomes a flowing stream, which passes
beneath massive natural arches and beside ancient cliff ruins.
1. To reach the first and by far the best hike of the trip, we drove 40 miles on Hole In The Wall Road, a bumpy dirt road with numerous branches to many exotic desert hikes, most leading eventually into the Escalante River Canyon.
2. We arrived, close to the point where our hike would begin the next morning, with just enough light to set up the tent.
3. The moon was brilliant for the first 2 weeks of our voyage. So bright was the moonlight that we could walk up canyon walls and into the sky itself unobstructed and actually gather stars into a basket lined with golden fleece...
