After all the intense hikes and camping I was glad to relax at our hut
near Tucson for a few days. It was quite hot though, and I quickly got
into my usual routine of going into town to swim at one of the city pools
and eat at Govinda's, where the temple priest is a friend of mine. |
| 1. One unexpected adventure arose as I left Salome for Tucson. I took the 88 - Apache Trail, having no idea that it was a dirt road running through a dramatic canyon. |
| 2. It begins by swooping down below the enormous Roosevelt Dam, which contains the artificial Roosevelt Lake. The Salt River has been plugged up and converted into Apache Lake, another reservoir for Phoenix. |
| 3. The drive through this canyon is fun, as narrow spiral lanes wind up the canyon walls along craggy precipices. This is called the Salt River Canyon Wilderness, and it is impressive. |

| 6. This is what the ladder is for. And the helmet had many uses on this excursion! |
| 7. Sleeping and picnicing and stargazing and desert gazing from the roof are some of my favorite activities in Tucson. |
| 8. Spinach pizza roasting on mesquite fire! |
| 9. A very loud cicada. |
| 10. This is a favorite trail used by immigrants who pass by in the early morning as I sleep in my tent on the roof. |
| 11. It's a fun place to hike. |

| 14. Down by the Range Market there is evidence of other people living out in the desert! |
| 15. Favorite health food store on 4th ave. |

| 22. I tried to visit Baboquivari but the tribal office claimed there was a fire and they were not letting visitors in. Where there is no smoke there is imaginary fire. |
| 23. After leaving Tucson, I camped at Burnt Rancheria on Laguna Mountain on the way to Hector and Sarah's for the cruise. |
| 24. |
| 25. The Pacific Crest Trail runs right through the campground, and the hiking and views are great. |
