USB Port to Serial Device Adapters:
The purpose of this article is to offer a solution to the problem of connecting a serial device like a gps unit to a new laptop which has no serial port. There is an effective device available for about $14 on the internet. The Unit is the "XTATIX computer cable USB to Serial 232 (DB9) Adapter," and I purchased one at TigerDirect.com.
Part of my purpose in writing this note is to enable the bargain hunter to benefit from my experience. These adapters range in price up to $80, and this is enough to make you wonder if the $14 model works at all. It does work, and hopefully this will save you some money. I had the same issue with bluetooth adapters. I bought one for $2.95 from TigerDirect when there were similar units for $40 to $80. I've used the cheapy for several months now without problems.
When you have the adapter in hand, connect the USB end into your laptop and Vista will offer to find the driver for you. Cancel the dialog and open your internet browser to the xtatix downloads webpage at:
http://www.xtatix.com/xtatix_advantage/downloads/
Download the driver labeled XCC-232, and run it. A small form with a single button appears. Click it. Wait a few seconds, and the driver will load.
When I opened my Delorme Street Atlas to test the GPS, I noticed that a new COM port had appeared in the GPS setup Devices panel, "COM 8," which was not there before the installation. I selected this and the GPS registered my position on the street atlas right away and everything linked up nicely.
Hope this article is helpful : )
